  • One of the greatest living exponents of the tabla, Pandit Amar Dey was born in a family with strong musical value. He initially recsived vocal training  from Pt. Tarak Chandra Ghosh. He Started learning the tabla from Pt. Bundi Mishra of the Benaras gharana. Butlater was accepted as a disciple by Ustad Maseet Khan and his son Ustad Karamatullah Khan of the Farukhabad gharana. He remained under their tutelage for many years. He also received advanced guidance in the Punjab Style From stad Allah Rakha. He has deeply studied the table and Pajkhawaj tradions of our country as is regarded as an authority in these fields.


    Pandit Amar Dey enjoyed great renown as a soloist and an accompanist throughout  the country. He has represented our musical tradition in the United States and Europe. As a young child he had the privilege of accompanying Pandit D V Paluskar and Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan. He has provided accompaniment to the greatest instrumental and vocal artist of his time, and was held in high esteem for the musicality of his Sangat. Notable among the instrumentalists with whom he has played are  ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pandit Vilayat Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Pandit V G Jog and Ustad Rais Khan: among vocalists pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, Pandit Jasraj, Vidushi Kishori Amonkar and Vidushi Girija Devi.


    Pandit Amar Dey has been a top ranked performer with all india radio for many decades.
