Hailing from a rich and glorious heritage ofVishnupur Gharana Nihar Ranjan started his career under the tutelage of none other than his illustrious father Satyakinkar Bandopadhyay, the doyen of Hindusthani Classical Music. Later Nihar Ranjan received talim from his elder brother Dr. Amiya Ranjan Bandopadhyay, a musician of rare brand who sings to the congnoscentti's delight only. So it was no surprise that Nihar Ranjan with rich potential would stand out in eminence having grown up in such a family.
Born in the year 1946 Nihar Ranjan made his presence, when he stood first in Dhrupad & Dhamar in AIR competition held in the year 1962. Once he entered the arena there was no looking back and he forged ahead with yet another first prize in Thumri in AIR competition in 1966. In subsequent years he has justified the promise reposed on him through numerous public recitals. His aesthetic approach to the rendition has earned him critics's applause time and again.He is M. A. from Calcutta University and performs regularly in AIR and T. V. and an A Grade artist of Khayal and Thumri. He was formerly head of the Dept. of vocal music of Rabindrabharati University He has been honoured as an artist of National Programme of Doordarshan, Delhi. He is also successful as a teacher in the field of Classical Music.
