Son of a illustrious musician of late Pandit Mantu Bandopadhyay (the legend of Harmonium playing), Sri Maharaj Bandopadhyay is very well known exponent of solo Harmonium playing all over India like his late father Pandit Mantu Bandopadhyay.
Pandit Maharaj Bandopadhyay is extremely devoted to Indian Classical Music from his early childhood. At the age of five, he started his living with tabla-training from his late father, a disciple of Ustad Abid Hussain Khan of Lucknow Gharana and Ustad Majid Khan Saheb of Rampur. At the age of eighteen with the guidance of his late father, for further development of Tabla, he started learning from Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa, a tabla maestro of India.
A “Ganda Bandha” ceremony was held in the year 1957 with Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa.
Sri Maharaj Bandopadhyay was also a disciple of Ustad Wajiz Hussain Khan of Lucknow. Besides Tabla, he is also a good Sarod Player by the guidance of his versatile musician father late Mantu Bandopadhyay. But he followed his late father by playing and devoting to Harmonium playing which he is still continuing at this senior age with due respect and love to his father.
All along Pandit Maharaj Bandopadhyay performed Solo Harmonium in classical ‘Raag’ & ‘Raginis’ in his inevitable “Gayaki style”, baj with superb alaap & meend, jorr, vilambit, madhya, barabar, drut gats and jhalas in various tala & laya. Eminent senior tabla players accompanied him, late Pandit Samta Prasad, late Ustad Keramatullah Khan, Shri Shankar Ghosh etc. At this senior age Sri Maharaj Bandopadhyay is regularly practising Harmonium and performing in various programmes, television channels and Baithaks with due honour from audience.
