Reminiscences of Pandit Prasun Banerjee are inseparable with that sublime voice arising as if out of a honey-comb, that sweet, reserved, romantic personality which always spoke in his heavenly smile and magnificant looks.
Hailed as the torchbearer of the Patiala-Kasur gayakiimmortalised by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Prasun Banerjee, right from his inception into the world of Khayal & Thumri, earned also a special distinction of being identified by the so-called "Prasun-flavour". To listeners, it was more of a new 'ang', bearing a touch of silken and fine, and those who heard it once could not forget it for the rest of his life.
Born on August 15, 1926 in Patna, he had the good fortune to get attuned to the evergreen music of the great stalwarts of Hindustani Vocal, who used to frequently visit his hometown.These memories of boyhood had deep engravings on his gayaki in the subsequent stages. The urge of learning properly drove him to Kolkata at an age of twenty, making a final drift from Physics - he was undergoing the Degree course at that time - to taking taalim in the austereGurukul process. Begining with Pandit Jamini Ranjan Ganguly, it was Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh who nurtured him as an expert gardener who attends a blossoming rose. The selection at the All India Radio, in 'A' grade, was instantaneous.
Came 1957, and spring in full bloom took him by the heart. He married Meera Chatterjee, a contemporary and exceptional classical vocalist whom he had been meeting frequently in concerts then. This caused a musical knot, this time with Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, a legend for all the ages to come. It was the Ustad's personal wish to teach Prasun. The result was history. A unique filigree of Khan Sahib's exquisitely majestic style with Prasun's pin-pointedsur-lagaav was what the audience got as the immortal nectar.
He never made the least bid to project himself, hence awards & honours were too few in his life; the ITC awardand the Bhuwalka award being notable. But probably the greatest awards were brought to him by his pupils whom he so sincerely taught and so dearly loved. Some of his students are today's successful performers, making today's audience conscious of his evergreen gayaki. Numerous are his compositions in Khayal & Thumri, the gems which are waiting yet to be published.
Prasun banerjee shall be remembered as the human being who loved everything that was to be loved. He left his body at the age of seventy, smiling at life as he always did.
