Shahjahanpur Gharana

Roughly 150 years ago three Afgan horsemen Migrated to india and took up commission as solders under the Nawabs and Rajas of REWA , SHAHJAHANPUR and MUZAFFAR NAGAR. They were also Rabab players , and as they lived in india , they ere infiated into TANSEN’s music. Of the three horsemen Gulam Bandegi Khan Bangas sifted in Gwalior. Gulam Bandegi Khan’s Grandsons  Hussain Ali Khan, Murad Ali Khan and Nane Khan were three brothers who converted the rabab into the Sarode. The Middle brother Murad ali Khan was Childless. He left his Gwalior home in search of a talented boy whom he could adopt and train up as a Sarodiya. He finally found an orphan in the colony of sarodiyas at Shahjahanpur and adopted him. This boy grew up into a great sarodiya named Abdulla Khan, and his son Md Amir Khan was the first guru of Pandit Radhika Mohan Moitra. So Radhika Mohan’s talim was from Shahjahanpur and the style was predominantly rabab ang playing full of complex right hand plucking. After Md Amir Khan’s death Radhika Mohan augmented his talim by learning from Md Drabir Khan, thee grandson of the illustrious Md Wazir Khan Beenkar of Rampur. Eventually Radhika Mohan’s style of playing was ablend of the two styles, which come to be known as shahjahanpu Senia style or gharana.

This album illustrates the performances of various successors of Radhika Mohan Moitra.

Buddhadev Das Gupta is the senior most exponent of one of the most authentic sarod gharanas today. He is a true genius with numerous achievements and one of the best known cultural ambassadors of our country.

Born in 1933 at Bhagalpur, he started his training from the age of ten from the sarod maestro, Radhika Mohan Moitra. His training continued for a period of 38 years until the demise of his teacher - the longest and most intensive training imparted by the great maestro to a disciple.

Since Radhika Mohan took his talim from Md. Ameer Khan, whose gharana's forte was the rabab-style of playing and also from Md. Dabir Khan of the Rampur Senia gharana, Buddhadev's style is based largely on that of his teacher's - emerging from a synthesis of the two gharanas. However, it is his unique musical personality that has shaped a distinctive style, completely his own. A deep understanding of the raga, a rare accuracy of the swaras, a superb balance between a gayaki and tantrakari, together with powerful bol patterns and fluent ekhara taans, of which he has been a pioneer, mark his music.

The recital emphasizes considerable research work on sarod and music in general.

A senior disciple of the late Sarod maestro, Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra, is one of the leading exponents of the Senia-Shahjahanpur Gharana of Sarod. Samarendra first learned to play the Sarod from his uncle, the late Surendra Nath Sikdar. Later, he went on to become a disciple of Pt. Maitra, or Radhu Babu, as he was affectionately called.

In a musical career spanning over 45 years, Samarendra has meticulously learned and mastered the playing style of the Shahjahanpore Senia-Bangash Gharana as Pt. Maitra himself did. A puritan like his guru, he believes that the true beauty of Indian Classical Music is in keeping the Ragas and their compositions pure and unaltered from their original forms. In addition to Radhu Babu, Samarendra also received inspiration and guidance from the late Pt. D.T. Joshi, a close friend of Pt. Maitra, as well as from other senior disciples such as Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta and Shri Nemai Dhar. He accompanied his Guru in a Jugalbandi for the National Program of Music in All India Radio, New Delhi, in 1966. He has also played in many prominent concerts in Calcutta, Delhi, Bombay, Allahabad and Benares. In the year 1983, the All India Radio also featured him in its prestigious Tuesday Night Concert series. He toured the USA in 2007. 

In addition to being a full-time musician, Samarendra also served as a staff artist of All India Radio for over thirty years. During this period, he came across various artistes and enjoyed the company of the most talented musicians in Calcutta.He has also carried forward the Guru-Shishya tradition by being an excellent teacher of instrumental music. He taught regularly for a number of years at the Md. Ameer Khan School of Instrumental Music, established by his guru.


Debasish Bhattacharya is an excellent Sarode Player of the country. Born in 1963 Debasish comes from a musical family. Late Sangeetacharya Kashinath Chattopadhyay of Rampur Sahaswan Gharana was his grand father. His musical training started at a very early age under the tutelage of his father Shri Shyam Sundar Bhattacharya, an eminent sitar player of that time. Thereafter he took training for several years with Pt. Ravi Laha, a disciple of Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra. Finally, since 1981 he has been taking extensive talim from Pt. Buddhadev Das Gupta, the ace disciple of Pt. Radhika Moitra. By dint of his hard labour and sincere adherence to the tradition Debashish has carved out a place for himself amongst the foremost Sarodiyas of his generation. His intelligent applications of extensive indigenous Bol(Banies) Ekharas with gamak with the deft left hand applications make his performances uniquely bright. He is a torchbearer of the Senia Shahjahanpur Gharana that evolved from Ustd. Murad Ali Khan and propagated through his descendants, Ustd. Abdullah Khan, Ustd. Md Amir Khan, and his celebrated disciple Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra. Debasish’s performances have been highly acclaimed at Prayag Sangit Samiti’s Annual Convocation at Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh, Kala Parishad’s conference at Bhopal, Vishnu Digambar Jayanti Festival arranged by Gandharva Mahavidyalayay at Delhi Kumar Gandharva Samaraho, Dewas (MP) and other music conferences throughout the country. Three times he played for All India Radio in their National programme of music. In 1986 he stood first in the All India Radio Music Competition.
He is an “A” Grade Sarode Player in the All India Radio and TV and also Lecturer at the Department of Instrumental Music, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata.

Anirban Dasgupta, is the son and disciple of the renowned sarod maestro of Sri Buddhadeb Dasgupta. As his son, Anirban grew and stepped in the very best ambience of Hindusthani Classical Instrumental Music which has helped his innate talent to mature into a musical personality and judgement well ahead of his age. He is well known today for his delicate mastery of sarod and great facility in its techniques and authentic repertoire. He stood in the first in the All India Radio Competition in 1987. Has performed widely in India as also abroad. He was fortunate to receive a personal note of appreciation from sarod legend Ustad, Ali Akbar Khan. Anirban has also achieved distinction through his expositions and articles on his fathers pioneering work on derivation of Classical Instrumental Composition from Rabindra Sangeet.

Prattyush Banerjee is a true twenty first century muisician who has been successfully multi tasking as a performer, music composer and arranger as well as an instrument designer . He is "taking sarod playing to the next level" and has also created his electronic version, Jyotidhwani . He was initiated to the art of sarode playing at a tender age of eight by his engineer father, Prasun Kumar Banerjee later he trained under Shri Samarendra Sikdar. Subseqently, for almost thirty years now, he has been under the coveted tutelage of the internationally celebrated maestro , Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta. 


Music was a passion amongst all the members of the NAG family, a well known business joint family of Bengal. Sugato's father Prabir Nag's interest in music, art and culture is keen, and as a high school student, ventured to take Sarod lessons with his classmate , the young Buddhadev Das Gupta , who later on went on to become one of the finest sarod players of the country. Mother Chameli Nag is a well known singer of Bengali songs of Dijendralal, Rajanikanto and Atul Prasad.


Being born into such a musical family, it was not surprising that music was in Sugato's blood right from the beginning. While his engineering career took up the primary focus of his life, the senior Nag resolved to provide musical training, along with the best possible education for Sugato. The constant social interactions with the Das Gupta family and continued musical guidance from Shri Das Gupta inspired Sugato to plough away on the Sitar and embark on an extremely serious and dedicated musical pursuit. In fact lessons with Shri Buddhadev Das Gupta continued as a more informal aspect of Sugato's musical training right through the early years until he became a regular disciple of him later in life.

Sugato formally started taking sitar lessons with Late Shri Anil Roy Chowdhury, in 1971, at Shri Das Gupta's recommendation. Shri Roy Chowdhury, a much respected elder of Calcutta's music scene, was a disciple of the legendary sarod player, Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra of the famed Seniya Shahjahanporegharana and had the uncanny knack of grooming up little musicians with unparalleled dedication.

After the passing away of Anil Roy Chowdhury in 1976, Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra adopted Sugato as his own disciple. Radhika Mohan Maitra was a strict disciplinarian, a purist and perfectionist and it was under his long and arduous training in all aspects of Sitar playing that Sugato emerged as a mature and sensitive artist, while still in his teens.


Having learnt also from the eminent musician and musicologist, Shri Ajoy Sinha Roy, a senior disciple of Baba Allauddin Khan, Sugato has imbibed talim of the Maihar Gharana too.


At present, Sugato is under the tutelage of sarod maestro Pt. Buddhadev Das Gupta and continues to enjoy the benefits of his guidance and his immeasurable wealth of musical knowledge. Although Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra belonged to the Shahjahanpore sarode gharana of the late Ustad Mohammed Ameer Khan Saheb (1873-1934), he had also had the good fortune of receiving sitar taleem from Ustad Enayet Khan of the Etawah gharana.


Through his close association with Enayet Khan's son, Sitar Nawaz Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pt. Maitra was an astute follower of the baaj of their gharana, so far as sitar playing is concerned. Hence, Sugato's sitar repertoire is a happy synthesis of the sitar baaj of Ustad Vilayat Khan and the rabab-based sarode baajof the Ameer Khan gharana. His immense talent is evident in the way he handles the sitar, playing and synthesizing two very different types of baaj coming from the aforementioned gharanas to create an unique and 'completely satisfying listening experience'. The alluring sweetness of his playing coming from the gayaki style , the effortless meendsextending upto six pardas combined with strong and intricate bolwork and gamaks reflects a mastery of execution of the highest order.

Sugato has performed in numerous music festivals in and outside of Kolkata. His performances at the Salt Lake City Music Festival, Sangeet Research Academy, The Dover Lane Music Conference, Ramakrishna Mission Music Festival, ITC SRA Sangeet Sammelan, Rajya Sangeet Sammelan, Indo Occidental Symbiosis, Kolkata, "Arambh" Festival, Bhopal, Sangeet Natak Academy, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, Sangeet Mahabharti, Mumbai and various other institutions of music have been acclaimed greatly by critics and connoisseurs.

Apart from performing all over India, Sugato has toured extensively in the US, Canada, Germany, France, UK, Holland and Japan, playing in University circuits as well as in Music Conferences and holding the audience in sway with his scintillating and exquisite performances.

Sugato is a regular performing artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan (State Television).

A very eloquent speaker, Sugato has given a number of Lecture cum demonstrations in Universities around the globe. Being technosavvy, coming from his Engineering background, his Power Point slide show presentations during his Lec- dems together with live demonstrations are extremely engrossing and knowledge imparting.

Supratik Sen Gupta born in the year 1981 in a family of musicians in Kolkata. He got  his early training from his father Sri. Kuber Sen Gupta. He began his formal training under Sri. Biswanath Das and Pt. Debaprasad Chakraborty. After that he was under the guidance of Sangeetacharya Late Ajoy Sinha Roy and Dr. Pradeep Chakraborty for a long time. Supratik joined ITC Sangeet Research Academy (ITC SRA) in the year 2002and was a musician scholar under the tutelage of Padmabhushan Pandit Buddhadeb Das Gupta and Partha Pratim Chatterjee, the Guru of the instrumental division of the Academy. After leaving ITC SRA he is now taking talim from Padmabhushan Pandit Buddhadeb Das Gupta. 

Achievement :- Supratik stood first in many prestigious music competitions such as “The Dover Lane Music Competition, “Swar Prabhat Talent Search Contest” and West Bengal State Music Competition. He also stood First in the performances conducted by " Bharatiya Sanskriti Parishad". He was conferred the Best Instrumentalist Prize from “The Dover Lane Music Conference”, Prasun Banerjee Memorial Award and Pandit Gokul Nag Memorial Award from “The Salt Lake Music Festival”. Supratik proved himself as the National Scholar of CCRT (Center for Cultural Resources &  Training) of New Delhi. He was also the holder of National Scholarship of "Ministry  of Tourism & Culture, Govt. Of India”. He is an A Grade Artist of All India Radio and Television.

Supratik toured Paris, Germany successfully with ITC SRA. He participated in many major Music Conferences all over India conducted by ITC SRA. He is visiting in different countries of Europe and Bangladesh regularly for concert. Recently he has visited China. He fortunate to give performance in several concerts accompanied with renowned tabla player like Pandit Ananda Gopal Bandopadhyay, Pandit Samar Saha and Pandit Gopal Mishra. Recently he got the opportunity of participating in the concert organised by “SPIC MACAY” at Rajasthan.

Dubbed the "British Sarod Maestro" by Time Out, Soumik Datta grew up in Kolkata, Mumbai and London. A chance encounter with his grandmother's Sarod (fretless stringed instrument) set him upon his musical journey. He was trained at Trinity College of Music and by the living legend Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta. Today Soumik is a musician and film composer with collaborators including Beyonce, Jay Z, Bill Bailey and Nitin Sawhney. Aged 29, he has taken the ancient Indian stringed instrument Sarod, into a global arena making him ‘one of the biggest new talents in Britain’ (Vogue). 

Playing both acoustic and electric Sarod, Soumik balances his recitals between Indian classical and contemporary. His band "Circle of Sound" with Bernhard Schimpelsberger won the Songlines Top of the world album award in 2012 after which he toured the world as an ambassador of the British Council. Future events in ties with his company, Soumik Datta Arts include the release of three albums and collaborations with Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Anoushka Shankar, Nitin Sawhney and Javed Akhtar.
