Bengal’s most celebrated musical genius, Rabindranath Tagore, believed that the world of his songs should be in tandem with the poetry of our various senses. To him, music was a perfect harmony of libretto and melody. While all compilations are almost always chronological, Tagore divided his oeuvre into genres dedicated to love, nature, his country and the divine. What remained was around 130 songs of diverse moods and subjects – a kaleidoscope which becomes a microcosm of the poet’s own inner world. This was the collection he called ‘Bichitro’ or the ‘varied’ – songs of different hues, sublime thoughts and mixed emotions. These songs surpass the mundane to rise as a magnificent body of unsurpassed beauty that never fails to awe-inspire.
