Sangeet Martand Padmavibhushan Pandit Jasrajji’s worthy disciple and Mewati Gharana Vocal Exponent Upama was born in Kolkata in a musically discerning and highly cultured family. Her first formal Guru Pt. Anil Datta found a child prodigy in eminent literary personality and poet Sakti Prasad Roysharma and Govt administrator yet a trained n qualified classical vocalist Manju Roysharma’s little daughter Upama . He eventually trained and groomed her methodically with strict discipline by giving a strong foundation of deep knowledge on a wide range of Ragas and Talas structures. She gave
her first year music exam of Pracheen Kalakendra , under Chandigarh Univ at the tender age of 6 and spellbound the examiner and the audience with her superbly matured raagdari and taansargam presentation . At the tender age of 10, as a Hindustani Classical vocalist , she was awarded National Scholarship under the aegis of Ministry of Culture, Govt of India, from Centre for Cultural resources and Training, New Delhi, and continued to receive it for several years and eventually got invited to perform in numerous venues in New Delhi, being selected as the top vocalist for Hindustani Classical vocal category at the age of 15 . She was introduced to Hindustani Classical Music at the age of mere two and half ,by her mother , who was taking rigorous ‘taalim’ under Ustad Aamir Khan linage of Kirana Gharana . Upama astonishingly picked up the Ragas and Bandishes listening to her mother ‘s riyaaz and she could identify a wide range of Ragas including the advanced level Ragas, as a small child. Her mother took little Upama to all the great concerts of the then Kolkata in order to develop a strong musical sense in her and to get her exposed to all the giants of Indian Classical music and their rendition styles. Also she listened to the records of all the great artists and followed them. So as the first guru her mother prepared her every possible way. It is her mother who injected the Pandit Jasrajji’s music in her veins and arteries. On a fine and magical day she took her to Doverlane Music Conference and she went into ecstasy after experiencing Guruji’s ineffable and divine renditions ‘Mata Kalika’ (Adana ) and Aaj to Ananda’ (Ahir Bhairav) and the experience changed her whole life.
Seeing her craze for Pandit Ji’s music her mother got Upama his audio albums one after another Upama had got so much absorbed and fascinated with The living Legend Pandit Jasrajji’s Gaayaki in her early school-days, that at the age of 11 only, she began to follow him as her Manas Guru , trying to assimilate his masterpieces by listening to them day and night and also began to plan and prepare so that she could move to Mumbai to become Panditji's disciple and make a career as a musician and simultaneously do her higher studies.
Eventually and most fortunately she got the privilege of receiving rigorous training and the priceless blessings from the Living Legend and Mewati Gharana Maestro Pandit Jasrajji in Mumbai, since 2001 entered long-awaited next level of her musical journey of hard work and learning.
In spite of holding a Master degree in Media and Communication and a Producer’s designation in a leading TV channel , she didn’t take a second to think of quitting a decently designated Electronic media job and embrace a musician's life, what she had been dreaming for, since her childhood, when the “unforgettable” moment arrived and Panditji told her “ You are not born for journalism… you must dedicate your life for music.
She was awarded Sangeet Prabhakar by Prayag Sangit Samiti, Allahabad and Sangeet Visharad by Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, as she completed the highest grades with record marks from the two universities , at very young age of 16. Upama was conferred Best Vocalist award by the Youth

Before moving to Maharashtra she had taken rigorous Advanced Classical ‘taalim’ beyond Sangeet Prabhakar and Sangeet Visharad degree from Vishnupur Gharana Maestro
Sangeetacharya Pt Amiyaranjan Banerjee, in Kolkata.
